Do you ever visit a website and just wonder what on earth it's supposed to be about? Is it a sales site, with products to purchase, or is it simply an informative site with no request for opt-ins or further action?

I have just visited a site following a request for support. The home page is very glossy, with nice photographs and a few bits of text, but there's no indication as to what the visitor should be doing.

If your site isn't clearly signposted then you're going to lose any opportunity to create any further relationship with your visitor. There will be no 'stickability' and no reason for your visitor to return.

Your site really must make it clear what you want your potential customer to do - what is your call to action? If you want to collect their details in order to build your list then you need to have a good enticement to make it worth their while.

The most popular enticement is the free eBook, but now videos are becoming much more popular and these can really help to start building the relationship from the outset. Alternatives include access to an E-course, or perhaps an audio recording, or even a 'tip of the week'.

Whatever you choose to offer, you need to ensure in your planning stage that the call to action is prominent. It may be in the body of the text, as part of your main blog post. Another key area is the p.s. after the end of your post. You really need to ensure that you make it clear what your visitor should do.

Take a fresh look at your site - is it still as appealing as you originally intended? Sometimes the original plan seems to have been lost as the site has expanded. Can visitors still navigate around the homepage with ease, and also move between pages? Are all the links still live?

If you're providing links to other websites have you checked that those sites are still up and running? There's nothing more frustrating than being sent from your site to sites that are no longer active.

If you're using Adsense on your site, make sure that the ads do not take over the prime spots where you want your product links to be. You need to monetize your site, but not at the expense of lost product sales.

So visit your site as though you had come across it for the very first time. Is the content relevant and up to date? Is it a site that attracts you and would make you want to stick around? Most importantly, what is the call to action? If it's not clear to you then it most definitely won't be clear to your visitors!

Keep dreaming those Big Dreams,

Graham
